Chapter Quantitative Reasoning

This chapter is about working confidently with numbers in context: percentages, ratios, rates, units, and data presented in tables and charts. These are the skills a statistics course leans on from the first day, and they are also the part of mathematics most likely to show up outside any course at all. The final section introduces systematic counting and basic probability, the doorway to both statistics and discrete mathematics.
Topics
  • Percentages: converting between percents, decimals, and fractions; percent applications
  • Ratios and proportions: setting up and solving
  • Rates and unit conversion: single- and multi-step conversions, speeds, unit prices
  • Reading tables, charts, and graphs
  • Counting: the multiplication principle, permutations, and combinations
  • Basic probability, including simple probability models
Resources
Chapters 5 and 6 of OpenStax Prealgebra cover fractions through percents and proportions; Khan Academy covers counting and probability.
